An overview


Household spending for cultural consumption is one of the key indicators identified by the Eu for assessing policies for the long-term development of living conditions and  welfare. In 2014 Italian households on average dedicated 6.6 percent of total final consumption expenditure to recreation and culture.

In 2016 reading of books and newspapers started to decline again. Among those who read books, "weak" readers prevailed: nearly half of them read a maximum of 3 books a year. The share of newspaper readers, mostly men and adults, declined sharply.

At the same time, the use of the Internet to read/download online newspapers, news and magazines in the 2015-2016 period grew from 30.5 to 33.8 percent. The phenomenon was more widespread among males and in the 20-24 age group, while there was a female prevalence in the 11-19 and 25-34 age groups.

In 2014, 29.6 percent of printed books were also spread in e-book format, but in 2016 only 8.4 percent of Internet users used the network to access digital books and people aged 15-24 years were the major users.

In 2016 cultural participation continued to grow: a great contribution came from the number of visits to the cinema, other music concerts, museums and exhibitions, archaeological sites and monuments. Young people aged 11-24 years were the major users of entertainments and leisure events.

The propensity to practice sport, higher among men than among women, was growing, but still involved just over one third of the population aged 3 and over; only one in four people took part in sport on a regular basis.
